Chapter 18

Slade

I FROZE AT SOPHIE’S remark, the murmur of SeaCow diners and the clink of their dishes fading into the background as I studied my breakfast partner, attempting to digest this fresh, boggling piece of dating news.

But she didn’t give me enough time to collect myself. “Yep. Stan and me are an item,” she said.

“I’ve gotta have another cup of coffee to take this in,” and I raised my cup to catch the attention of a waitress.

Sophie wasn’t one to sit and sip, though. When words popped into her head, they got said. “I just kept thinking what was the deal with being with a cop. You, Callie, Mark, that luscious cowboy of yours . . . and Seabrook, of course. You didn’t know him. Lord Almighty, I wanted to date that man the whole time he was here on Edisto Beach, but along comes Callie and nips that option in the bud. She didn’t even want him at first, but he only wanted her. The whole island kept waiting for them to get together. Damn, that was a sad story.”

She took a breath. Yes, terribly sad. I was familiar with the whole Seabrook history and didn’t care to discuss it.

Sophie kept going. “Then Stan literally moves to Edisto when he retires, to take care of her, like she needed taking care of. Then along comes Mark. I ask to work for him. I do everything in my power to latch ahold of him, but, no, he takes to Callie like a magnet to a car door. Finally decided I need to get me some of that, that . . . whatever it is.”

I went for my coffee black this time to get the caffeine in me sooner. Callie warned me Sophie was an acquired taste. She clearly loved to color outside the lines.

At last I squeezed in a few words. “Please tell me that you aren’t screwing Stan just to see what it’s like to be with a cop.” Poor Stan. If that was the case, he’d be hurt, and Callie would be livid at her mentor being taken advantage of.

Hand on her chest, Sophie pouted. “I’m sort of hurt you said that.”

No, she wasn’t. “Just answer the question, Sophie.”

The yoga lady’s voice hardened a bit. “Didn’t hear a question, Slade.”

Would Sophie act this ugly in front of all those zany mood rocks on her coffee table and mess with the karma or chakras or whatever it was that she claimed inhabited her place? She always said she didn’t allow negative under her roof. Guess it was okay under others.

I leaned in toward her. “Do you really like Stan, or is this a badge bunny thing?”

A glower twisted Sophie’s expression so silly I busted out laughing. “You don’t know what a badge bunny is?” God, I wish I’d nabbed that picture.

“Cannot imagine,” came the reply, her confused expression saying she wasn’t sure if the designation was a good thing or not.

“It’s someone who pursues sexual relationships with cops.”

Sophie’s forehead smoothed then twisted up in an even more comical contortion.
